Knowing how to get somewhere is important.
Knowing what direction it is also important.
But knowing what direction it is only works if you know what all the directions are.
The cardinal directions are the primary, or main directions, that you must know when discussing how to get somewhere.
They are relatively easy to remember when you use quick sayings like “Never Eat Soggy Waffles,” or “Never Eat Slimy Worms.”
What you do is just take the first letter from each of those phrases.
N E S W
Those are the first letters of each cardinal direction — so just remember one of those phrases and you’re off to a good start.
Never Eat Slimy Worms or Soggy Waffles — it’s up to you — whichever is easiest to remember.
The next part is pretty quick too… Just draw a Plus sign … like this.
After you go that you just put the first letter on the top — The N — and that is North.
Now if you look at clock and you watch the hands move around — pay attention to the way that they go… that is clock wise.
Label the rest of them in the same direction — so this one will be the E, for East. This one will be the S, for South. This one will be the W, for West.
And you’re done!
You have located the cardinal directions.
So, just to recap the four cardinal directions are North, South, East, and West. You can remember them by the first letter of each word in funny phrases like Never eat soggy waffles or Never eat Slimy Worms.
Knowing where these are on a map can help you find yourself in the real world and follow directions to where you are going.
